Personal health is not generally a comfortable topic for men, particularly when the topic is concerning the prostate glands. As the prostate glands are located in a very personal area of the body, this is to be expected. However, open communication and education about the prostate are necessary, as prostate cancer and other problems are on the rise. Men everywhere should take the important step and open themselves up to a dialogue on the prostate, for the sake of their health.

Pushing into your 50s or 60s and experiencing the symptoms of an enlarged prostate? Health supplement may be a good complement to self-care tips, especially for men who have confirmed through a medical examination that they have benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). A non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, BPH may lead to several complications like painful urination, urinary tract infections, bladder stones and kidney disease. Before you worry your head off, though, your next recourse is to consider the various treatment options at hand.
If surgery is too distressing for you to consider and the symptoms are not severe enough to warrant it, you may opt for remedies that draw on the healing power of herbs for prostate problem relief. To promote healthy cell growth and a more regulated hormonal balance in the prostate, saw palmetto comes to the rescue for men looking for ways to address urinary flow problems. Others also try combining a couple of ounces of Saint John’s Wort oil with minute portions of lavender, rosemary, and Roman chamomile essential oils which is then rubbed on the skin underneath the scrotum on a daily basis.

My dog has an enlarged prostate. We have had several tests run, and still do not know what’s causing it. We’re switching to another veterinarian soon, but both medications he’s on (Baytril and Cytomax) have not really improved his condition. He still has much trouble defecating. We’re already giving him softer foods to help him pass everything, but sometimes he strains and nothing comes out but a few drops. He is an 7 year old, neutered english cocker spaniel.

When the prostate tissue surrounding the urethra starts to expand, the person immediately starts to have problems with urination. This is also known as a condition called Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, or enlarged prostate, and affects men over the age of 40. This condition is normal and is thought to be the natural part of aging. Some men are more affected than others. The most common reaction is to visit the doctor in order to get help. However, there are some men that avoid the doctor in order to stay away from prescription medications or to have an exam. There are natural alternatives, such as Saw Palmetto, but there are certain theories against this alternative prevention.
Saw palmetto is a small palm tree, also known as the American Dwarf Palm, which is usually found in the Southeastern areas of the United States. The tree has small seeds that have been thought to help cure an enlarged prostate. Research has proven that close to 2 million men in the United States use saw palmetto with hopes that it will improve their prostate. In earlier studies, saw palmetto proved to be effective in the treatment of an enlarged prostate. However, in a more recent and more controlled trial, a double blind placebo failed to show any effects of saw palmetto on the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy. It is thought that in earlier trials, the patients were able to smell the saw palmetto in the placebos, thus making the results false.

Europe has been using Saw Palmetto to promote prostate health for years. Enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and the herb saw palmetto has been studied in European labs for it’s effectiveness in treating the disorder. American labs lag far behind in their research of enlarged prostate and herbs to treat it. Modern medicine in America frequently relies on pharmaceuticals sometimes to the detriment of natural herbal remedies. For instance, Doctors usually proscribe Proscar (T) and other prostate drugs which take time to become effective, unlike the Saw Palmetto herb which will kick in within 30 days.
The medicinal part of ‘Serenoa Repens’ or the Saw Palmetto is derived from the partially dried ripe fruit of the plant. The Saw Palmetto herb is indigenous to Southeastern United States but is most prevalent in Florida. It is the sterols and the fatty acids that are found in the berry that are the active ingredients. In Germany ninety percent of treatments for BPH use the saw palmetto herb, while in Italy it is fifty percent. Their successes have been many since BPH is nearly universal in the aging process of men.
