The prostate gland is located directly beneath the bladder and in front of the rectum. It’s estimated that approximately 234,460 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, and approximately 27,350 will die of the disease. About one man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only one man in 34 will die of the disease.

The most common cancer in American men, excluding skin cancer, is prostate cancer. Early prostate cancer is confined to the prostate gland itself; most of the patients with this type of cancer can live for years without any problems. Like other cancers, the cause of prostate cancer is not known; it appears to be more common in African American men and men with a family history of the disease.

Ok, my friend went to the doctor a few weeks ago, and got the news about his enlarged prostate. He came home and bragged to me about it, saying that he wasn’t going to take the medication because he didn’t want to shrink his “package”. Obviously he doesn’t know what a prostate is.
Anyhow, we have been going to the bars on the weekends, and he hits on women and nonchalantly tells them of his large prostate. Well of course the conversation ends there and the women get a chuckle out of it.
I know I need to tell him about this as its important he take his medication, but would it be out of line if we went out one more time and I secretly videotape him hitting on women telling them this? His kids would get a big kick out of it.

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland in males, located below the urinary bladder, and it encircles the upper part of the urethra. This part of the urethra is called the prostatic urethra. Urine from the urinary bladder passes out through this urethra.

Hence it is clear that whenever the prostate becomes enlarged, it is likely to put pressure on this part of the urethra, i.e., the prostatic urethra, causing obstruction when the patient passes urine. In very early cases, there may not be any symptom or there may be negligible/minimal symptoms, since the force of the contraction of the urinary bladder may be able to overcome the small initial obstruction cause.d by the enlargement of the prostate gland.

5 Questions About Enlarged Prostate

A very large proportion of men over the age of sixty suffer from BPH (enlarged prostate gland)- about one in two. The figures for the over 50s is about 33%. Normally the gland is no larger than a walnut and is situated at the neck of the bladder. When it enlarges, the pressure it puts on the urethra (the tube which drains the urine from the bladder) is such that the tube is narrowed and urination becomes difficult.

Because the enlarged prostate acts like a clamp on the urethra, difficulty in urinating is the main symptom together with increased frequency, burning sensation and difficulty in emptying the bladder. The condition is also known in medical circles as BPH which is an acronym for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
